early birds

We spent the morning
walking alongside early risers and early birds
chasing worms and water droplets dripping
off the backs of ducks.
My brother asked about pierogi and potatoes
and we didn't have an answer
but you knew someone who did
and before I knew it
I was a telephone operator
relaying messages between two parties
closer in distance to each other
than I was to either of them
but practically a world apart
if not for me.
We didn't spot a single new bird
only old birds
borrowed birds
blue birds.
We'll try again next month
but there's few new birds left for us to find
we'll settle for old birds
and each other's company.
